Amit Shah was born in 1981 in North London to parents originally from Kenya, with his grandparents hailing from Gujarat, India. His father worked as an accountant, while his mother managed a health food shop. Although he had no prior acting experience, Amit was cast as the lead in his school play at the age of 16, marking the start of his acting career. He went on to earn a 2:1 degree in Drama from Staffordshire University before training at the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). In 2003, Amit received special permission from LAMDA’s principal, Peter James, to graduate early in order to begin rehearsals for Bombay Dreams, a West End musical produced by Lord Andrew Lloyd-Webber and composed by AR Rahman. Amit’s career continued to flourish in both television and stage productions.

Early Life
Amit Shah was born on October 22, 1964, in Mumbai, India, into a Gujarati Hindu family of the Bania caste. His great-grandfather served as the Nagarseth (chief of the capital city) of the small state of Mansa. His father, Anil Chandra Shah, was a successful businessman who owned a PVC pipe business in Mansa. Shah attended school in Mehsana before moving to Ahmedabad, where he pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from CU Shah Science College. After graduation, he worked in his father’s business and also gained experience as a stockbroker and in co-operative banks in Ahmedabad.
Shah was involved with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) from a young age, attending local shakhas (branches) as a child. He formally became a swayamsevak (volunteer) during his college years in Ahmedabad. In 1982, he first met Narendra Modi, who was then an RSS pracharak (propagator) in charge of youth activities in the city.
Early Political Career
Shah’s political journey began in 1982 when he joined the RSS. He soon became acquainted with Narendra Modi, who advised him to join the student wing of the RSS, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Shah became an active member of the ABVP in 1983 and later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1987, a year before Modi joined the party. Shah became involved in the BJP’s youth wing, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), in 1987, eventually holding various roles such as ward secretary, taluka secretary, state secretary, vice-president, and general secretary.
He gained recognition for his management skills when he served as the election campaign manager for Lal Krishna Advani in Gandhinagar during the 1991 Lok Sabha elections. In 1995, when the BJP formed its first government in Gujarat under Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel, Shah and Modi worked together to weaken the Indian National Congress in rural Gujarat. Their strategy involved identifying and recruiting influential local leaders to join the BJP, thus establishing a network of 8,000 leaders across villages.
