Early Life

Jodie Comer was born in Liverpool on 11 March 1993 to Donna, a Merseyrail employee, and James Comer, an Everton FC physiotherapist. She has a younger brother, Charlie, born in 1995. Comer grew up in the Childwall area of Liverpool and attended St Julie’s Catholic High School in the neighbouring Woolton area, where she became close friends with future Olympic athlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson. At the age of 11, Comer began acting at a weekend drama school called CALS in the Belle Vale area of Liverpool. Through CALS, she participated in the Liverpool Performing Arts Festival in 2006 at St George’s Hall, winning first place in her category with a monologue about the Hillsborough disaster.

During her time in high school, Comer’s friends removed her from their dance group due to a family holiday that clashed with rehearsals for the school’s talent show. As a result, she performed her Hillsborough disaster monologue in the show instead. Though she did not win, her performance led her drama teacher to reach out to contacts in the entertainment industry, resulting in Comer’s first acting job in a BBC Radio 4 play. Her co-stars encouraged her to get an agent, advising her that she had the potential for a successful acting career.
