Sarah Margaret Qualley was born in Kalispell, Montana, and is the daughter of actress and model Andie MacDowell and former model Paul Qualley. She has an older brother, Justin, and an older sister, actress and singer Rainey Qualley. Through her mother, she has Scottish roots. The Qualley family initially lived on a ranch in Missoula, Montana, before moving to the Biltmore Forest neighborhood of Asheville, North Carolina, when Margaret was four. After her parents separated when she was five, she split her time between them, and for many years, they lived just a few miles apart.
Margaret’s family home with her mother is in North Carolina, where they are close to extended family. As a teenager in Asheville, both Margaret and her sister debuted at the Bal des Débutantes in Paris. At 14, Margaret left home to attend the North Carolina School of the Arts, where she studied dance.
